This article explores metaphor as one of the most widely used rhetorical devices in literary works, with a particular focus on its application in Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum. Metaphors serve as a powerful tool in literary expression, creating a sense of defamiliarization by distancing the tenor from the vehicle. This separation engages readers in an interpretative process, prompting them to bridge the conceptual gap through reflection and imagination, thereby deepening their engagement with the text and extending the reading experience. Mo Yan’s unique linguistic style incorporates not only metaphors but also personifications, hyperboles, and other rhetorical techniques, all of which contribute to a richly layered and evocative narrative. His use of rhythmic and tonal elements further enhances the musicality of his prose, reinforcing the emotional and thematic depth of his storytelling.
Given the significance of metaphor in Mo Yan’s literary style, its translation poses unique challenges, particularly in preserving its aesthetic and cultural nuances. Using Hassanein’s Arabic translation of Red Sorghum as a case study, this paper examines how similes and metaphors are rendered in translation through the lens of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.
