Metaphor plays a crucial role in literary works, as its unique expressive technique distinguishes literature from everyday language, adding a layer of literary quality. From a traditional rhetorical perspective, metaphor, as a rhetorical device, has a long history and profoundly influences literary creation. Aristotle, one of the pioneers of metaphor rhetoric, believed that metaphor is essentially similar to simile, serving as a rhetorical means to convey the same meaning through word substitution and functioning as a modifier in sentence structure. Aristotle emphasized that metaphors arise from the connections and contrasts between things, and great writers must be skilled in discovering similarities between different objects. Furthermore, Richards proposed the interaction theory of metaphor, asserting that a metaphor consists of a primary and secondary subject that interact with each other. French scholar Fondane categorized metaphor as a figure of speech, believing that metaphors are assigned new meanings to express different emotions, which differ to some extent from their original meanings. These theories provide a profound perspective for understanding the rhetorical use of metaphor in literary works, demonstrating its unique function and value in literary creation.
